An exploration of the emerging technique of High Dynamic Range photography from a master of the subject. This allows the full range of tones in a scene to be captured and manipulated/rendered in post production software, including fascinating insights into new technologies in the pipeline.

Four members of the Cotswold Monochrome group came to give us an overview of what makes a fine monochrome print. With discussions on techniques from large format/wet processing through to digital, and a wide range of subjects from figure to landscape, an evening at which I thnk we all learnt something and enjoyed some fine images.

The first of our speakers for the year, Sarah Howard, gave us an illustrated rundown of the good and bads in taking photographs. Sarah is a well known Cotswold Landscape photographer, with a book on Westonbirt, several exhibitions and a photography training business. Lots of questions were asked and even the very experienced photographers in the club learnt (or were reminded of) a few things! We hope to see Sarah again. Her website is here.

Tuesday 6th September 2011

The first session back after the Summer break was a critique evening of the Western Counties Photographic Federation did-not-quite-make-it prints from the annual exhibition. A wide range of subjects were covered and all were technically very good. There were some stunning prints that members would be happy to keep on their walls, along with some that simply did not appeal. As a critique evening it really helped members work out what they did and did not like.

Friday 19th August 2011 New Season

Well the summer is winding down and its time to think about coming back to the club.

You will find an exciting and varied programme waiting for you. Russell has excelled himself in his last year as Programme Secretary with a great mix of subjects and speakers, kicking off on the 6th September with the WCPF Portfolio - just to get you all motivated to take great photos. And don't forget the Cotswold Way Project - this is due to end early next year and Vince is drawing up plans.....

Following the AGM the Committee have been working on clarifying the way in which the club operates. The Rules for competitions have been updated, improvements in how competition entries are submitted have been defined and the rules for joining and moving between the A and B competition categories have been improved. Notes are available on the Rules page.

During the summer there has been a lot of focus (intended pun) on HDR and the workshops and trip to Gloucester Cathedral led by Mike Hawkridge; this was a really worthwhile evening and the results I have seen so far are stunning. You will get a chance to see them later in the year. The final workshop is on the 25th August.

We are still short one Chairman, so Steve will stand in until one can be found or coerced into taking over, and one Programme Secretary.(Any volunteers?).

I look forward to seeing you all in the new season.
