From Meeting, 23rd November 2010

Following Club Night, a brief meeting was held to discuss the project, led by Vince. It was agreed that the Cotswold way from Tormarton to Leckhamption would be the main subject of the study, and that participants with ideas on subject groupings should let Vince know these by email by Sunday 29th November.

It was also agreed that Steve would put up an extra page on the website where suggestions for small group meetings to photograph a section or subject could be posted. Please email Steve direct with these suggestions (his email address can be found in the emails sent by Vince).

From Vince, 16th November.

Our aim is to produce a collection of photos of places, people, buildings/architecture, landscapes, etc (see below for further ideas), taken on or close by the Cotswold Way. Whether we attempt to cover the whole 102 miles of the National Trail [see the website: www.nationaltrail.co.uk] , or restrict ourselves to some lesser length (say Tormarton to Leckhampton) will be decided at an initial meeting of the members who wish to participate. There is information of circular walks taking-in stretches of the Way on this website, if you find that attractive.

The ultimate aim is to display our photos at an exhibition in one or more local venue(s), and perhaps also to put together an "ebook" - but we will plan these in due course. To facilitate this, please keep careful records of where your photos were taken! The timescale for the project is approximately 12 months, allowing coverage of the four seasons. All members are invited/encouraged to take part, with a guarantee of at least one photo each in the exhibition. We will arrange printing for any participants who would have trouble providing these themselves.

We envisage a mix of "record" shots and more "arty" work. We suggest you keep high resolution JPEG digital-file versions of each image, and also make a lower resolution JPEG (as per Club competitions). We ask that you send a copy of the latter to me as coordinator, as an attachment to an email. I will keep this for/until the end-of-project selection, and also provide copies for Steve to (at his discretion) put on our website.

One of the first decisions to be made is how we "divide up" the work. I suggest that we ask people to choose a stretch (after we've made the 'all or part' decision), either individually or perhaps in pairs, though we have to do this flexibly and cooperatively to please as many people as possible, and provide full coverage. Information to assist you in this choice can be found on the website above, or on other websites (Google "Cotswold Way"). For the initial meeting, would you please be prepared to stay a little later on Tuesday, 23 November (i.e. after the speaker has finished his presentation). We will plan subsequent meetings (say) every 2 months to review progress. You can also email or phone me (information sent on email).

Further ideas for subject-matter: street scenes/ village scenes; the path itself (gradients, stiles, signs, mud, flooding, etc); all times of day, seasons, weather; black & white as well as colour; other walkers and groups; in the vicinity of the path (your judgment).

At the start of the 2010/2011 season, our Chairman Frank Jenkins proposed, and it was agreed that, the club would organise a photographic project. At the regular club night on the 12th October a significant majoity of those wishing to contribute decided that, from proposals submitted by club members in the previous weeks, the chosen subject would be:

Along the Cotswold Way

The starting point for this project is the brief description:

From Chipping Campden to Bath, or short sections such as our own pad; Selsley to Hawkesbury Upton. Landscapes across the Severn Vale, eg from Selsley Common, Coaley Peak, Uley Bury, Drakestone Point, North Nibley, Wotton Hill, Hawkesbury Upton, Horton. Villages and churches along the route. Neolithic Long Barrows and Iron Age Hill Forts. Stone Quarries. Monuments (Somerset, Tyndale). Secluded valleys (Alderley, Kilcott), Water Mills, Strip Lynchets. Evidence of recent voluntary work (tree and scrub clearing, path revetting and stepping.Waymarks. Restoration of Limestone Grassland.

It was also agreed that:

Vince Pycroft will co-ordinate the project

All participating members would be guaranteed at least one image in the finished portfolio.

Once the project is complete, exhibition sites will be sought and publication as a book will be considered.

The club website will publish submissions for the portfolio every 3 months for review.

To kick-off the project Vince will arrange a meeting before Christmas, with a view to strating the project in the new year, to run until Christmas 2011 when the finished portfolio will be presented to the club.

This web page will be the central reference point for news about the project and who is participating - keep watching!
